We were delighted to play host to the IMI Skills Competitions Refinishing and Body Repair tasks at Eyebox 15th-17th May. Each competitor that took part was nominated by their tutors or employers and were the highest scorers in an online quiz, winning their place in the national heats after demonstrating their theoretical knowledge. This qualified them for the opportunity to enhance their skills and showcase their talent with 6 competitors from Refinish and 6 from Panel competing each day at Eyebox - totalling 36 apprentices competing over the three days.
There was a winner awarded each day in each skill but the overall aim for the competitors is to make it into the top six and go on to compete in the national finals which will take place 18th-22nd November in Manchester. The results from each day are collated and the top six points scorers across the three days win their place at the finals.
Andrew Moring, Marketing Director at Morelli says,
“As a supplier to the Professional Bodyshop Trade since 1957 we have seen many changes as the industry has adapted to new technology and innovation with new materials in use. The one issue that has remained constant for many years has been the lack of new staff coming into the industry so when the chance arose to support WorldSkills UK in 2011 we were quick to accept the opportunity, eager to give back to our sector and support colleges, apprentices, and young new talent seeking employment in our rewarding industry. Our commitment has continued to this day, and we are delighted to now be hosting the IMI’s Skills Competitions national qualifiers at Eyebox, our very own training centre.”
It was amazing to see the competition take place in the Centre and there was a real buzz every day as the competitors set about their tasks trying to complete them in the most efficient way to the best of their ability. It was great to see so many people visiting to watch the competitors and add to the atmosphere on the day also. All the competitors were amazing, we congratulate them and hope they enjoyed the experience. Good luck to those that progress to the finals!

“The Eyebox Training & Conference Centre proved to be the great location we had hoped for our worthy qualifiers to come together in. The venue enabled them all to showcase the incredible skills and talent that are in the automotive body repair and refinishing sectors. We had a great competition across the three days and everybody thrived on the facilities and space we had within the venue to showcase just how amazing a career in automotive can be.”
