The ARIES Standard is a sector-specific environmental framework designed to drive carbon reduction, sustainability, and efficiency across the vehicle accident repair industry. Developed in response to the growing regulatory, commercial, and consumer demand for carbon management and reduction practices, ARIES provides a clear, practical pathway for repairers, insurers, and supply chain partners to measure, reduce, and demonstrate their environmental impact.
The automotive industry has been closely aligned to PAS2060 for some time. This has been viewed as a good start by many, to create a mechanism to measurably reduce carbon and provide transparency. As some will know, PAS2060 is now in run off and will no longer be an officially recognised standard by the end of 2025.
Unlike generic carbon reporting standards, ARIES is built by the industry, for the industry, addressing the unique challenges of vehicle repair related operations:
- Repair Process Emissions Energy-intensive processes e.g., energy use, spray booths, repair strategies, products
- Repairer Business Pressures Balancing environmental goals with repair quality, cost control, and operational efficiency.
- Supply Chain Impact Material sourcing, logistics, and waste management.
Supporting Regulatory Alignment ARIES is designed to align with leading carbon standards such as:
- ISO 14068-1: Carbon Neutrality
- PAS 2060: (Expiring Q4 2025)
- Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
- UK Government existing and future Net-Zero Strategies
Key Principles
The ARIES Standard is built on 3 core pillars:
1. Measure
Accurate, Repair-Level Carbon Calculation Capturing Scope 1, 2, and working to scope 3 emissions.
Standardised Reporting Framework Enabling repairers to report CO₂ and track progress.
2. Reduce
Operational Efficiency Energy consumption, repair methods, and waste reduction.
Supply Chain Engagement Incentivising the use of carbon measured items and processes.
Investment Before Offsetting Prioritising on-site reductions negating the need to carbon offsets.
3. Verification
Independent Validation Supporting third-party audits for insurer, fleet, and regulatory compliance.
Recognition & Accreditation Creating an ARIES Certification Mark to demonstrate sustainability leadership.
Benefits to Industry Stakeholders
Repairers | Insurers & Work Providers | Supply Chain |
Cost savings via energy efficiency and per repair funding element. | Transparency on repair carbon footprint. | Supply chain accountability. |
Competitive edge with ARIES certification. | Easier compliance with net-zero targets. | Partnerships with carbon management suppliers. |
Uniformed Compliance to multiples works streams. | Strengthened ESG credentials. | Collaboration with repairers on sustainability. |
Governance & Industry Collaboration
ARIES is being developed with the support and expertise of key stakeholders across the vehicle repair sector, including insurers, manufacturers, repairers, supply chain partners, and specialist industry bodies and it is expected to see this forum grow over time to include other collaborating parties.
The standard will be guided by an independent working group to ensure it remains impartial, industry-relevant, and aligned with UK and international environmental standards.
